No
matter how big my website is, there are still bound to be questions
about who I am, my copywriting services and how I can help you. I've
compiled some of the most common questions, along with my personal
favorites, here. If you have a question you don't see answered here,
all
you have to do is contact
me, and I'll post the question and the answer here for the
world to see.
Q. I live in the Raleigh, NC area and I'm looking for a content copywriter. Can I meet you?
A. It's rare that I conduct face-to-face meetings - even with local businesses looking for copywriting services. Typically (and I'm not saying this is you) people who want to meet me in person either want to pick my brain and/or waste my time. To be frank, I'm too busy working on copywriting and marketing projects for my valued clients to dorp everything and meet someone who just wants to price shop.
However, it CAN happen...
If you DO have a copywriting or marketing project that you think requires a face-to-face meeting, I suggest sending me an email outlining your project and your needs. Or, contact me during office hours to discuss. And please be honest - if you're just price shopping, let me know upfront. I'll appreciate the honesty and be much more willing to work with you.
Q. Do you require money in advance of starting a copywriting project?
A. I typically require 50% of the estimated project cost upon starting a project and the remainder upon submission of the final draft. Keep in mind that they 50% advance fee may end up being more like 40% or 60% of the final project cost if the scope of work changes.
Q. What happens if I'm not happy with the way my project is coming along?
A. We stop the project, and you tell me exactly what you like and don't like. From there, I fix the issues. Often, it's a simple matter of miscommunication, and once we re-agree on terms, we forge ahead. If at that point, you still are dissatisfied with the project, I decide on a 'kill fee' for the completed portion of the project and we part ways. This leaves you with money in your pocket and a basis for another writer to work from.
Q. I'm an account executive and my agency never pays for a project until we're 100% satisfied with it - and we never pay anything upfront. Will you take payment after the project is completed to our satisfaction.
A. Look, I'm a flexible guy. But, chances are, your agency president is crusing around in a BMW and there's a $300 coffee-maker in your office. If you can't pay half up front, why should I think you'll pay the rest in the end? I'll take that coffee-maker as collateral, though.
Q. Where did you learn to write?
A. I never stop learning to write. With that said, I was fortunate enough to have very good teachers in college while studying public relations. While the PR field didn't always leave a lot of room for creativity, my studies gave me an excellent foundation for the copywriting skills I have today.
As for my advertising copy experience, I took courses at New York University and worked as a copywriter in the advertising department atone of the most successful casinos in the world - Mohegan Sun - where I wrote copy for websites, public relations, entertainment, retail and more.
Lastly, I've learned to write by reading. If you're an aspiring copywriter, and you think that you'll get better at writing by writing, think again. Pick up a book as part of your writing.
Q. How long will it take to complete my copywriting project?
A. It depends on the project and the nature of the copywriting. Your best bet is to contact me to talk about your project and how I can help.
Q. I already have some copy that I've written for my project. Can you use it?
A. I can use the copy you write, but don't expect to recognize it when I'm done with it. When clients send me copy to use for a project, I always tell them it will help (and it does), but I also tell them that I may only use it as a reference and not as a starting point for my copy.
Q. Do I own the copyright to the copy you write for me?
A. Yes. Once it's paid in full. Until I'm fully-paid for the content, I own the copyright. If I write web content for you and you use it online before paying for it (within reason)you are in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and I can have your content removed from search engine results.
